Ben Campbell byl pacient s rakovinou. Během léčby se potkal se zdravotní sestrou Maggie Lockwoodovou, které byla také rakovina diagnostikována. Velmi rychle se sblížili a začali spolu chodit. Brzy se s Maggie oženil. Spolu adoptovali kluka Auggieho Robertse.
