Dr. James Lanik je vedoucí doktor traumatolologie v Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Nahradil dr. Stanleyho Stohla jako primář pohotovosti, jehož smlouva nebyla prodloužena. Na začátku šesté řady rezignoval na funkci, protože ho ztížené prostředí nemocnice po propuknutí koronavirové pandemii psychicky i fyzicky vyčerpávalo. Místo něho se novým šéfem pohotovosti stal dr. Ethan Choi.
